Masters Skills Development


New 2019! 

This is a new program in 2019. Jason Rusu will be providing paddling training sessions for the Nelson Paddling Club. Paddlers must have Level 2 or 3 can register directly to this course. Level 1 paddlers require the NPC Adult Learn to Paddle program or private lessons completed before they apply and get approval of the coach.


Jason is an NCCP Level 3 Certified coach with over 20 years of coaching experience. Jason has competed in Sprint Racing Kayak and Canoe for over 30 years and has raced at the international level and represented Canada at the 1992 Olympics.

Adult Paddlers who are interested in improving their paddle stroke efficiency and boat handling skills will benefit greatly from the knowledge and expertise Jason is able to share.


Level 2: Sometimes referred to as "intermediate", this level is for those who need to refresh their skills in order to paddle more efficiently and confidently in more performance oriented boats and in varied water conditions. This level is for people who have paddled before and have reasonable confidence in varied paddle crafts on flat, choppy or slow-moving water. This level focuses on boat control as well as maintaining speed and rhythm in varied conditions.

Level 3: is for confident paddlers who want to refine their skills. This program will be given primarily on the water and will concentrate on diagnosis of problems and practice of improved technique. You will practice adapting your paddling technique to different types of paddle craft and water conditions. Participants should have the stamina to paddle continuously for 8+km


 

This program has been divided into 3 sessions 
Module 1: May 20th – June 24th Module 2: July 8 to Aug 12th Module 3: Aug 19 – Sept 30th or you can register in all 3 sessions at a reduced cost.

This program will run every Monday regardless of weather issues! Dryland programming will be provided when on the water programming is prohibited by weather. Cold weather gear is required for early season paddling.

Participation in this program also includes Thursday night race fees!!!

Registration:

One time full season fee: $410

Module 1: May 20th – June 24th: $160

Module 2: July 8 to Aug 12th: $160

Module 3: Aug 19 – Sept 30th: $160

Sprint team program- Regatta Ready- Development


The regatta ready developement group is the entry level program to the Nelson Paddling Club Sprint Team. Developed through fun games and drills, athletes will improve paddling technique, balance and will have an opportunity to experience team boats. This program has a smaller ratio of athletes to coaches and is an ideal learning environment. 


Practice Details: 

Tuesdays 4:30-6:00, Saturday 9:00-11:00

Practice is always held at the Rowing Pavillion, at Lakeside Park in Nelson, BC.

Sprint Team Program - Regatta Ready- High Performance


The Regatta Ready Advanced Level program of the Nelson Paddling Club's Team is designed for athletes who have experience in sprint canoe/kayak. This program offers three practices per week, where athletes develop their paddling skills through drills, techniques, and games. In this program, athletes will have opportunities to race at different provincial regattas, national regattas and local race nights.


Practice Details: 

Monday and Wednesday: 4:30pm - 6:00pm 
Saturday 9am - 11am

Practice is always held at the Rowing Pavillion, at Lakeside Park in Nelson, BC.

Sprint Program Registration Spring 2018:

Program Fees: $160 from August 19th-Septmeber 28th - that's a lot of sessions for your money!  Not all sessions are mandatory, however athletes benefit from participating in as many of the practices as possible.=

Shoulder season paddling requires appropriate cold water immersion apparel. 

Example of appropriate clothing for spring paddling is: 

  • lycra tights/leggings with a loose fit over shorts
  • polypropylene long sleeve underwear 
  • lighter shirt
  • light windbreaker
  • hat/toque
  • water shoes/flip flops
  • towel
  • change of clothes/warm up clothes

Paddle Night

 

This fun and social night is a great opportunity to meet like minded paddlers. At Each session paddlers will have the choice to participate a timed distance race or a fun paddling themed activity!

This year the program is included in Regatta Ready and Masters Skills programs (No extra fee to participate). A 5 punch pass can also be purchased through the club and can be used to attend this program. Single participation "drop in" is also welcome. Come join the fun!

Paddle night is always held at the Rowing Pavillion, at Lakeside Park in Nelson, BC.

Price is $25 per race for non club members, Race night is free if you are paricipating in the Masters Skills Development Program or the Regatta Ready branch of the sprint team.

Adult Learn To-sdays


The Learn-to Tuesday Adult Paddler Program will introduce paddling technique and is designed for adults with little to no sprint paddling experience. This program is also recommended for recreational paddlers looking to improve their stroke development. The First Year Adult Program has a smaller ratio of athletes to coaches and is an ideal learning environment. These oen month sessions are a great way to try the sport!


Practice Details: 

Tuesdays: 6:30 - 8:00pm  

Practice is always held at the Rowing Pavilion, at Lakeside Park in Nelson, BC.

Registration:

Adult Learn To-sdays run in four week sessions. Cost for a four week session is $100, this includes membership and insurance through canoe kayak BC.

Summer Camps

- SPEND THE SUMMER ON THE WATER -  

These fun summer camps are designed for children between the ages of 8 – 16. Children will develop kayaking and canoeing skills, while making friends, and having fun on the water.

New 2019! One Day Summer Camps! Monday 9:00AM-3:00PM. Build your skills in a one day summer camp, a great head start to a week of Summer Camp.

Private/Group Lessons

WHY DO PRIVATE LESSONS WITH US?

  •  To learn how to kayak and/or canoe in our sprint boats or your personal boat.
  •  To improve your paddling technique.
  •  To develop fundamental skills and feel confident paddling on your own!
  •  Have private one-on- one lessons with our certified coaches.
  •  Make life-long memories of paddling around on Kootenay lake! 

Details:

Private lessons are available starting June 1st 2019. 

A minimum of 1.5 hour lesson is required.

1-12 participants for a group lesson.

Registration:

The Nelson Paddling Club will be offering two options for Private lessons. 

The first option is appropriate for youth aged 8-16 of all levels (beginner-expert) and adults of any paddling experience.  These sessions will be taught by the Head or Senior coach. 

Typical class of boats and paddlers coached:

-ICF Sprint/Marathon Kayak and Canoe

Private lessons: 

1:1 Lesson for 1.5 hours $60

Group lessons:

2 participants, 1.5 hours $40 each 

3 participants, 1.5 hours $35 each 

4-6 participants, 1.5 hours $30 each

8 participants or more, 1.5 hours $25 each 

The second option is appropriate for Intermediate Adult Paddlers who are interested in improving their paddle stroke efficiency and boat handling skills.

Prerequisites include:

1) Tread water for 1 minute
2) Previous season of paddling experience
